Carlos Darío, the young man who protested against far right spanish facist politician being celebrated in Aguascalientes, Mexico, was illegally detained with fabricated evidence

For background Aguascalientes, Mexico is a very conservative place, being one only state, where the candidate Xóchitl Gálvez from the most succesful right wing political party in Mexico. Partido Acción Nacional (PAN), prevailed in the 2018 elections for presidency.

While currently in the majority of Mexican States, abortion legallity is up to 12 weeks, women in Aguascalientes face a different realty with only 5 weeks to realize their pregancy status, and have a right to choose. This public health concern is no other fault rather than the power status Partido Acción Nacional helds over Aguascalientes in different ways.

So, there is no suprise, to see what right wing politicians can do, to try to achieve a certain image and portray their limited and oppressive ideals by force. And young activist Carlos Darío would face upon that realization on May 8th.

On May 6th, the fair right president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, met in Aguascalientes with governors from the PAN party, and other political actors, including the governor of María Teresa Jiménez Esquivel. To celebrate Hernán Cortés, a spanish conqueror who mascared thousands of indigenous people. But there was hope, not all citizens of this small state would agree to this.

Carlos Darío was arrested two days after participating in a protest on May 6 in front of the Aguascalientes Congress. The demonstration was organized in opposition to Díaz Ayuso’s visit.

Members of the Communist Youth of Mexico and other organizations declared at a conference on May 15 that Carlos Darío was arrested on May 8, 2026, while returning home from work on a bicycle, by ministerial agents who allegedly acted without showing an arrest warrant and through the use of force.

At a hearing on May 13, the Prosecutor’s Office charged Carlos Darío with crimes against health, although the defense maintains that there was no flagrant offense and that the evidence presented is insufficient, therefore they describe the case as a fabrication.

The organizations also denounce possible violations of due process, such as the lack of immediate notification to family members and delays in bringing them before a judge.

What is the fate María Teresa Jiménez Esquivel is so scared of? Is progress and equality so threatening she needs to put behind bars those who dare to oppose the status quo she upholds?
